I have a burst pipe and water is going everywhere. What can I do whilst I wait for my Service Today plumber to arrive?

The first thing to do if you have a burst or leaking pipe is to turn the water off at its source or the main water supply, located just inside the property boundary. In an apartment, this may be below the laundry or kitchen sink. This will stop (or at least reduce) the water flow prior to your technician arriving on site. Toilets can be turned off via the tap located close to the cistern, or sometimes inside the cistern itself. In some cases, sinks and basins may have a shut off located under the sink.

Leaks can be one of the major reasons for increased water bills. Service Today can help with any water or pipe leak detection, but there is also a simple test you can carry out yourself to check if there is a leak in your home. Note: this test should be conducted over a 30-minute period, during which time no water is being used on the property.

  1. Find your water meter, which is usually located in front of the home in a covered box near the street.
  2. Write down the numbers indicated on the meter at the start of this test.
  3. Return to check the meter reading after 30 minutes have passed.
    • If the numbers have not changed, you most likely do not have a leak in your pressurised water system.
  4. Shut off the valves under all toilets in the house, and repeat steps 1-3.
    • If the numbers have not changed, it seems that your pipe and toilet systems do not have a leak.
    • If the numbers have changed, this indicates water being consumed – even though water was not actually being used during the test. In this case, it is highly recommended that you call Servpros and arrange for a professional leak detection to be conducted on your property.

Since gas is a highly flammable substance, gas leaks need to be treated with urgency. In the event of a suspected gas leak, follow these steps:

  1. Locate your gas meter, which is normally found at the front of your property. It will have a yellow handle that you need to turn 90 degrees, so that it sits perpendicular with the gas pipe. That will shut off the gas supply coming into the home.
  2. Call Service Today immediately and book a technician to come and inspect the property ASAP.

It could be several things, however it’s possible that you have a water leak coming from somewhere. Your best option is to arrange for a Servpros representative to carry out leak detection on your property, as the cause of the mark could be one of a few things.

It appears you may be experiencing ‘water hammer’. Water hammer is caused by vibrations in pipes that are not secured properly. This can often be fixed with arrestors, so give Servpros a call and get one of our expert technicians to inspect your piping and determine the cause of the noise.
